Ernesto Valverde is hoping to restructure Barcelona's roster in January as he has an excess of players.

"There are 24 players in the squad and I am really happy with the players I have," he said in a news conference ahead of Sunday's league game against Las Palmas at Camp Nou.

"When we get to January, though, perhaps we will talk about restructuring. But as far as the squad is concerned, I will admit that I don't like squads to be too big."

Thomas Vermaelen and Arda Turan have not played a single minute in the Champions League or La Liga this season.

Real Madrid has reportedly advised David de Gea to put extension talks with Manchester United on hold.

De Gea was set to go to Real Madrid in 2015 but the two clubs didn't submit the paperwork before the summer transfer window deadline.

De Gea is out of contract in 2019 and reports recently indicated he was nearing agreement on an extension.

De Gea will have the opportunity to improve his value during next summer's World Cup.

Inter Milan won't send Joao Maria to Arsenal as part of a transfer in January.

Ozil is out of contract at the end of the current season and has been linked with Inter, Fenerbahce and Manchester United.

Arsenal have been unable to make progress with their extension talks with both Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, though the club is more optimistic on their chances of keeping the former than the latter.

Manchester United's chances of buying Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid next summer have improved with the return of Diego Costa to his former team.

Griezmann had been expected to move to United last season but Atleti decided to keep him after their transfer ban was upheld.

Griezmann signed a one-year contract extension with Atletico but he remains interested in United.

Arsene Wenger wants Arsenal to push for new contract talks with Aaron Ramsey and Danny Welbeck.

Both Ramsey and Welbeck are coming off their current deals in 2019.

Arsenal allowed Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil to enter the final year of their deals without extensions.

“It is something we want to address,” Wenger said in relation to fresh terms for Ramsey and Welbeck. “Both of them are in a good moment for us. But with the level of transfers and the amounts that players expect on their contracts, you will have more and more players going into the final year of their contracts. You will be in a position where you either extend for money you cannot afford or you go into the final year of their contract.

“This season, there were 107 players in the Premier League who got into the final year of their contract and you will see that more. The clubs want too much money for normal players.

“They say that if one player is worth £200m [like Neymar], then this player is worth £50m. But everybody knows for that player £50m is too much and they cannot afford it. So what happens? The club cannot sell and doesn’t extend the contract, so more and more players are going into the final year of their contract.”

Chelsea has agreed to sell Diego Costa to Atletico Madrid for $78.7 million.

Costa will sign a contract through June 2021 and will be Atletico's most expensive signing, with El Mundo reporting Atletico will pay €55 million (£48.5m), plus €10 million (£8.8 million) in variables, surpassing the €40 million they paid Porto for Radamel Falcao in the summer of 2011.

The total fee is around £58 million, which is the same price Chelsea paid Real Madrid for Alvaro Morata.

Atletico can officially register Costa on Jan. 1 when their transfer ban is lifted.

Philippe Coutinho has claimed he has no agreement to join Barcelona next summer.

Coutinho was given a positive reception from the Liverpool crowd when he made his first appearance at Anfield since he nearly left the club for Barcelona.

Liverpool refused to even consider selling Coutinho despite an offer of £119 million.

“What happened was a job offer and, in life, sometimes you get interested; sometimes you don’t and, in my case, everyone knows that I got interested, my family too,” said Coutinho.

“As I have always said, it is great to receive an offer from such a great club like that. But it is also a great honour being here. Liverpool is a great club worldwide. I’m here and I will give my best as always.

“It was a complicated month for me but as I have said, it is an honour to receive that offer but it is also an honour to wear this shirt, so what I can do is work hard and honour that on the field. It is all cool. I’m working hard, my thoughts are on the team’s goals, making a good season, with the national team too, doing my best to get there.”

Robert Lewandowski is determined to move from Bayern Munich to Real Madrid.

The board of Real Madrid have not sanctioned the purchases of players over 30 and are not interested in Lewandowski. Real Madrid has interest in 21-year-old Timo Werner of Leipzig instead.

Lewandowski believes Bayern have lost the necessary mentality to compete in Europe.

Karim Benzema expects to remain with Real Madrid for as long as he's regularly in their starting XI.

"Playing in another team or retiring here? If I am in the starting line-up then there is no need for me to go anywhere else," said Benzema.

Benzema has been with Real Madrid for nine years.

"It's the best club in the world," said Benzema. It's a pleasure and I'm very proud. The expectations are always high and you start every season with zero and you have to work your way up to the maximum level."

Josep Maria Bartomeu has again said that Lionel Messi's father has signed a contract renewal with Barcelona that will keep him at the club until 2021.

Barcelona announced in July that Messi had agreed upon a four-year extension.

Bartomeu, quoted on Barcelona's official website, told 8TV: "Leo's commitment to Barca is total. His father has signed the renewal and, therefore, the only thing left to do is to take the photograph."

Without announcement of an official signing, there has been speculation that Messi's future with Barcelona remains in doubt.
